Swapsity and Word11 Partner for Sustainable Blogging Festival
The world’s first 24-hour blogging festival is turning to the community and tapping into the power of swapping to create an urban campground for Toronto bloggers

Toronto, Ontario, August 10 — Swapsity, Canada’s leading swapping community, has announced a partnership with Word11, Toronto’s first 24-hour blogging festival, to reduce waste, increase efficiency, and make the festival a collaborative and sustainable event.

Swapsity is helping Word11 reach out to Swapsity swappers and Torontonians for materials—projectors, white screens, tables, camping chairs, tents and more—needed to create the festival’s camp experience, in return for up to three free admission tickets worth $40 each. Swapsity encourages sharing, swapping, collaboration, community-building and saving money and is thrilled to help Word11 meet its sustainability goals, which include reusing, recycling and reducing waste.

Beginning August 27, 2011, Word11 is bringing together bloggers of all backgrounds to learn from expert speakers and network all day and into the night by creating an outdoor campground within the city. Appealing to more than 37,000 bloggers across Toronto, it is a festival that truly celebrates blogging.

“What often happens is that items and materials are bought for an event that are not used after the event is over,” says Tm Mahdi, Word11 committee member and director and founder of Cg6 Inc. “Some of these wind up recycled or in landfills. The bottom line is that this is not an efficient and sustainable way to run an event. Instead, we’re looking to Swapsity members and our community of bloggers to provide us with the resources they can spare and we can use the money we save to put on an even greater event.”

Those who have items to contribute can upload the pictures and descriptions on Word11’s swap portal on Swapsity. Word11 will choose which items are needed, contact their owners directly to arrange item drop-off and provide them with as many as three free tickets. This collaboration helps make Word11 accessible to those who have a tight budget but are willing to help out. It is also an opportunity for Torontonians to participate in the collaborative consumption movement.

“Swapsity has envisioned using our swapping economy to support meaningful, non-profit causes, organizations and events that get the Toronto community collaborating, saving money and lowering their environmental footprint,” says Swapsity founder Marta Nowinska. “It’s exciting to see Word11 incorporate swapping into their planning process. This could be the start of a new trend! Our last initiative saw us swap more than 2,350 items in nine hours and save Torontonians over $18,000 and we’re looking forward to creating more social, environmental and economic impact by collaborating with the Word11 team.”

The partnership between Word11 and Swapsity is just one aspect of the event’s sustainability initiatives, which also includes providing green shuttle service and minimizing the use of unnatural light.
